Chapter Five
Technology and the Future of Education
Technology offers several innovations that that could enhance content development and improve the effectiveness of the learning process, which help to transform the way students receive instructions from tutors. Technology has made easier for tutors to reach their students and vice versa.
Platforms like Coursera, Edx, etc., have played a significant role in the learning process in recent times, giving everyone access to quality education in ways that would not have been thought possible in the past. People of all backgrounds can sign up for any course on these platforms irrespective of their background.
What’s more, most of the courses offered on these sites are tutored by well-experienced professors from top universities. Technology removes the barrier to learning and gives students the flexibility of learning from wherever they want, whenever they want to. Nowadays, almost anyone can obtain universally-recognized certificates from an online school. Inventions such as videos, chatting applications, discussion forums, eBooks and PDF documents have further simplified the learning process.
Going forward, here’s how technology will shape the future of education:
Technology will enable learning models to become more personalized
Every student has a unique learning style. Thankfully, technology allows educators to understand how each student learns best so that they can help them learn in their best style. Innovations such as DreamBox, a math education application that is used in some classrooms across the United States adjusts to each student's skill level and allows them to learn at a pace that suits them best.
Experts expect adaptive learning programs as this to enable students to tackle subjects in a way that will foster maximum learning.
Technology will encourage students to learn on their own
Search engines like Google and the enormous amount of materials online enable students to become the teacher. It is often said that students learn best when they become the teacher. Technology makes this increasingly so. This is as the internet makes it easier for students to research specific subjects. Unlike in times past, today’s academic environment is such that educators encourage students how to learn on their own by using the resources at their disposal .
Technology Will Provide Insights into Student Struggles
Technological advances will make it easier for educators to evaluate student performances and monitor how they are doing. This makes it easier to for teachers to identify areas where students are struggling and to help them overcome their struggles.
One good example of such invention is DreamBox, which provides teachers with recordings and data into how learners are learning and developing so that the teachers can concentrate their classrooms on areas where students need the most help.
